Camp Point 4th of July Celebration & Chautauqua
Camp Point Bicentennial Chautauqua
July 4th 8am-10pm
Bailey Park, Camp Point, IL
The Chautauqua Assembly was held in Camp Point from 1907 until the early 1930s. These events originated in Chautauqua, New York and were popular in Canada and the United States. They typically included speakers, humorists, musicians, and clergy taking place over several days (usually a week long celebration) during the summer. Camp Point was said to have one of the largest and best organized Chautauquas in the area.
In honor of the Adams County Bicentennial, a Chautauqua-style program will be held in conjunction with the usual Camp Point 4th of July activities.
A few of the highlights include:
Tim Good, speaker – “We Saw Lincoln Shot” (Tim will have books for sale including the most popular We Saw Lincoln Shot.)
Dr. Curt Fields, speaker/impersonator – “Ulysses S. Grant in Illinois”
Dr. Tim Jacobs, speaker & Master of Ceremonies – portraying “William Jennings Bryan”
Recognition of Camp Point Founders
Music by Mike Anderson, Pike Pipers (recorders), and Giddy Up & Go Boys
Pictures and program booklets from early Chautauqua events will be on display at the Camp Point Library’s Heritage Room during regular library hours.
